High-Level Talks with U.S. Law Enforcement Agencies
Kim Suhwan, Deputy Commissioner of the National Police Agency, attended the '4th UN Chiefs of Police Meeting (UNCOPS)' held at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York, USA, on the 27th.
UNCOPS is the largest international conference on public security held every two years. This year, police chiefs from over 120 countries gathered to discuss new approaches for UN peace and conflict resolution, prevention of conflict and violence, peacekeeping, and strengthening peacekeeping operations.
In his keynote speech, Deputy Commissioner Kim stated, "The Korean National Police have been striving to respond to transnational crimes and contribute to UN peacekeeping efforts." He added, "We are establishing effective prevention and response systems for crimes and accidents by introducing new technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data." He emphasized, "We will focus on enhancing police capabilities in cybersecurity, resolving transnational crimes such as drug trafficking and fraud, and digital sex crimes, and will prepare concrete cooperation plans with various UN partners."
Deputy Commissioner Kim also held talks with senior officials from U.S. law enforcement agencies to discuss security issues and cooperation measures in depth. On the 24th, during a meeting with Shelby Smith Wilson, Senior Deputy Director of the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), they exchanged views on joint implementation of official development assistance (ODA) projects between the two agencies and discussed ways to strengthen capabilities to respond to transnational crimes. On the 25th, he met with Carlos Matters, Director of the Diplomatic Security Service (DSS), to share opinions on cooperation measures including security for the U.S. Embassy in Korea and protection of key U.S. personnel.
