Pohang City and the Pohang City Council for Sustainable Development held the 29th Pohang City Environment Day commemorative event on the 5th at the Pohang City Lifelong Learning Center Grand Auditorium.
Under the theme "Pohang, Where Life and the Environment Breathe Together!", the ceremony began with a pre-event performance, followed by awards for individuals who contributed to local environmental conservation, a screening of a video on carbon neutrality practice activities, the reading of the Pohang Environmental Declaration by the Gyeongbuk Eastern Technicians Association, and a carbon neutrality performance.
Additionally, at the outdoor event venue, various organizations and agencies operated promotional and experiential booths on the theme of carbon neutrality.
Zero-emission vehicles such as electric and hydrogen cars were exhibited and available for test drives. There were also attractions such as the Ministry of Environment's carbon neutrality photo contest exhibition and promotional materials on geoparks.
Other side events that received great response from citizens included a carbon neutrality photo zone, introduction of the Pohang City Environmental School program, promotion of greenhouse gas diagnosis and carbon point sign-ups, fossil soap making, keyring making using plastic granules by the Gyeongbuk Sharing Rehabilitation Center, and promotion of the soon-to-be-launched reusable container project for funeral homes, the first of its kind in Gyeongbuk.
Mayor Lee Kangdeok said, "I would like to express my gratitude to all the environmentalists working to protect our one and only Earth," and added, "Pohang City will continue to make multifaceted efforts for carbon neutrality and strive to establish policies to create Pohang as an eco-friendly city where citizens can enjoy a high quality of life."
Pohang City was selected as a preliminary candidate site for the Ministry of Environment's 'Carbon Neutral City' project, part of the government's New Growth 4.0 Strategy, at the end of last year, and is making every effort for the final selection scheduled for this year.
To this end, the city plans to accelerate initiatives such as expanding green mobility with eco-friendly electric and hydrogen vehicles, increasing urban forests, and restoring the Haksancheon stream, in order to become a leading carbon-neutral city in both name and reality.
