Shortage of Workers Leads to Hiring Through Secondhand Trading Platform
After Hiring, 800,000 Won Advance Received for Medical Expenses Needed
A man who received an advance payment of 800,000 won before starting work disappeared after just four hours on the job and then demanded immediate payment for the hours worked, promising to repay the advance a month later, sparking outrage among netizens. On the 29th of last month, a post titled 'Hiring an employee through OO' was uploaded on the online car community BobaeDream. The author, Mr. A, shared a recent incident, saying, "A brother who installs air conditioners hired a new worker, but a frustrating situation arose."
According to Mr. A's post, Mr. B, who installs air conditioners, was short-handed and hired Mr. C through a secondhand trading platform. Mr. C pleaded that his father was sick and needed hospital bills, so he received an advance of 800,000 won from Mr. B before starting work. However, on the first day of work, Mr. C waited around for about four hours because there was no manager at the work site in the morning and actually worked for only about 30 minutes before disappearing. Mr. B called Mr. C, who replied with a text message saying, "I realized we don't get along well after working. I will pay back the 800,000 won advance on June 25. Sorry."

Although shocked, Mr. B thought such things could happen and tried to move on, but then Mr. C sent another message demanding payment of 56,000 won for the four hours worked. Mr. B responded, "Deduct it from the 800,000 won advance and repay me," to which Mr. C agreed. However, Mr. C suddenly changed his stance, insisting that the advance and wages were separate and demanded immediate payment of the wages. Mr. B offered to meet and pay in person, but it was no use. Later, Mr. C sent even more absurd messages. After inquiring with the site management, Mr. C contacted Mr. B claiming that his shoes were damaged during the four hours of work and demanded compensation for the shoes.
When Mr. B refused to comply, Mr. C repeatedly sent messages like "Send the wages and shoe money," "Send the shoe money," "Shoe money is separate," and even broke down the words into "Shoe" "Money" in separate texts. Due to the harassment-level messages from Mr. C, Mr. B has been suffering from severe stress, Mr. A explained. In a message Mr. B sent to Mr. A, he wrote things like "I’m starting to hate people" and "Maybe this is why incidents happen."
When Mr. B did not comply with the demands, Mr. C repeatedly sent messages such as "Please send the wages and shoe money," "Send the shoe money," "The shoe money is separate," and even fragmented messages like "shin," "bal," "gaps." In the post, Mr. A lamented, "Since we were together for four hours in the morning, it’s right to pay him, but it’s very frustrating." Netizens who read the story reacted with comments such as "The young person only learned how to be bad, let's sue for extortion," "This is a legendary villain," "Why didn’t he return the 800,000 won right away?" and "He really needs to get severely punished to come to his senses." One netizen comforted, "I went through something similar, and you have to pay the daily wage separately. It seems you were victimized by the worst of the worst."
