Medical Student Who Killed Girlfriend "Frequent Arguments"... Police Say "Not an Accidental Crime"

Expected to be sent to prosecution as early as tomorrow
Psychopath diagnosis test not yet conducted

A medical student from a prestigious university who killed his girlfriend on the rooftop of a building in the heart of Gangnam, Seoul, is expected to be sent to the prosecution as early as the 14th.

A National Police Agency official stated at a regular press briefing on the 13th, “The suspect testified during the police investigation that there had been frequent arguments recently over breaking up,” adding, “Considering the overall situation, we cannot definitively say it was a premeditated crime, but we judge it was not an impulsive act.”

The police conducted two profiler interviews with the suspect, Choi (25), who is charged with murder, and plan to send him to the prosecution as early as the 14th.

In particular, the police have identified circumstances indicating that Choi planned the crime or prepared tools prior to the day of the incident, and are focusing the investigation on the possibility of a premeditated crime. It was confirmed that about two hours before the crime, Choi purchased a weapon to be used in the crime at a large supermarket in Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do, and targeted the victim’s carotid artery. It was also investigated that he changed into clothes he had prepared in advance after the crime to prevent bloodstains from getting on his clothes.

However, the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCR-L) test for Choi has not yet been conducted. The police plan to carry out the psychopathy test by referring to objective information such as Choi’s past interview records, school life records, and testimonies from people around him.

The psychopathy test is scored out of 40 points, and in Korea, a score above 25 classifies a person as a psychopath. However, even if classified as a psychopath, it does not affect the sentencing later on.

Meanwhile, Choi is accused of repeatedly stabbing his girlfriend, victim A (25), on the rooftop of a 15-story building in Seocho-gu, Seoul, around 4 p.m. on the 6th.

At the time, the police responded to a report from a building across the street that “a man was about to jump,” rescued Choi, and during the process of checking the rooftop again after Choi said he had left his belongings behind, they found the deceased A and urgently arrested Choi. It is known that Choi scored a perfect score on the college entrance exam several years ago and is currently enrolled in the medical school of a prestigious university in Seoul.
