DataUniverse Improves Phishing Prevention Features in SmartPhishing Protection

Data Universe Co., Ltd. announced on the 9th that it will enhance the functionality of its voice phishing prevention service, ‘Smart Phishing Protection’.


‘Smart Phishing Protection’ is a voice phishing prevention service developed based on Data Universe’s own patent. Generally, people rarely have long phone calls with unknown numbers. However, voice phishing calls come from unknown numbers and deceive victims during long conversations to steal money. Data Universe identified this pattern and provides a whitelist-based service. The service is developed with an algorithm that sends step-by-step warning notifications to prevent financial fraud when calls with unknown numbers continue, excluding phone numbers saved in the user’s contacts and already known numbers. This algorithm has been patented for its innovative idea.


Since phone numbers used for voice phishing are blocked through reports or constantly changed, using a whitelist is more effective in preventing voice phishing damage than relying on blocked number lists or user report histories. The recent improvements include refining and reinforcing the internal database for this whitelist to further increase the accuracy of suspicious phishing numbers.


In addition to voice phishing via phone calls, the service also includes functions to prevent smishing and messenger phishing using text messages or messengers. It analyzes received text and messenger content to identify keywords, and if a financial fraud risk is detected, it displays warning notifications to prevent damage. Currently, general warning notifications are provided, but the upcoming update will include in-depth analysis of smishing and messenger phishing methods and an advanced keyword detection algorithm to generate detailed, customized warnings for each method.


Recently, phishing methods inducing malicious app installations through URLs in text messages have been rampant, and a corresponding function is being prepared. It will analyze URLs included in text or SNS messages to inform users whether the link is legitimate or a dangerous link containing malicious app installation.


To prevent cash transfers caused by voice phishing, a warning notification is displayed when banking apps are launched. The UI/UX will also be improved by enhancing the readability and increasing the size of the warning message so that users can more easily recognize the alert content than before.
