"Irresponsible Behavior Teaching Distorted Historical Views to Youth"
On the 19th, the government expressed regret over the Japanese government's approval of textbooks containing biased content regarding Dokdo and the issue of Japanese military comfort women victims.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement in the name of its spokesperson on the same day, stating, "We express deep regret over the Japanese government's approval of textbooks that include unjust claims about Dokdo, the issue of Japanese military comfort women victims, forced labor issues, and extremely irrational and incomprehensible false descriptions of colonial rule, and we urge immediate correction."
It added, "The government strongly protests the Japanese government’s repeated approval of textbooks containing unjust claims about Dokdo, which is clearly our inherent territory both historically, geographically, and under international law," emphasizing, "We clearly state that any claims by Japan regarding Dokdo are unacceptable." It continued, "Allowing textbooks filled not with apologies and reflection on past mistakes but rather glorifying them is not only contrary to the trend of developing bilateral relations but also an irresponsible act that teaches distorted historical views to the younger generation."
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized, "We cannot help but be concerned about the prejudices that the future generations who will shape not only the future of bilateral relations but also Japan’s future will develop if they are exposed to such biased and distorted history education. The Japanese government must take a more responsible stance in educating future generations while facing history honestly."
