"If Yoon Exercises Veto Power, the People Will Resist"
The Democratic Party of Korea stated, "The government's and ruling party's reflection, introspection, and reform of state affairs must begin with accepting the special investigation (special prosecutor) law regarding the investigation pressure allegations in the case of the Marine Corps personnel's line-of-duty death."
On the 13th, Kwon Chil-seung, the senior spokesperson of the Democratic Party, said at a National Assembly briefing, "The incompetence in failing to protect the safety and lives of the people, the irresponsibility in uncovering the truth of the incident, and the immorality in attempting to conceal the truth are a condensed version of the total state affairs chaos revealed under the Yoon Seok-yeol administration."
Spokesperson Kwon emphasized, "The people demanded a complete transformation of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration in this general election," adding, "The government and ruling party must keep in mind that they have effectively received a vote of no confidence close to impeachment for their two years of state governance."
He continued, "The Yoon Seok-yeol administration's willingness for reflection, introspection, and reform of state affairs will be judged by its attitude toward the special investigation law," and said, "The appointment of Lee Jong-seop as ambassador to Australia, the key suspect in the pressure allegations, became a major issue in the general election by reigniting calls for regime judgment."
He also said, "The vast majority of the people support the special investigation law."
Spokesperson Kwon argued, "With more than a month left in the 21st National Assembly's term, there is no need to unnecessarily postpone the handling of the special investigation law to the next National Assembly," and added, "The ruling party should approach the handling of the special investigation law with a sense of 'duty,' not 'cooperation.'"
He further warned, "If President Yoon exercises his veto power against the special investigation law passed by the National Assembly, it would mean rejecting the public will revealed in the general election," and added, "It will face national resistance close to a disaster."
The special investigation law, proposed by the Democratic Party in September last year, was designated as a fast-track bill in the plenary session with the cooperation of the opposition parties. Subsequently, it was automatically submitted to the plenary session on the 3rd of this month.
