Samsung SDI Hosts Test Drive Exchange Event for Volvo Electric Trucks Equipped with Its Batteries

Samsung SDI showcased the world's first large electric truck equipped with its cylindrical battery at its headquarters.

On the 12th, Samsung SDI announced that it held a test drive and exchange event for Samsung SDI employees at its Giheung headquarters in Yongin, together with Volvo Trucks Korea, featuring Volvo Trucks' 'FH Electric'.

The FH Electric is the first large electric truck globally launched by Volvo Trucks in 2022. It is equipped with approximately 28,000 of Samsung SDI's 21700 high-nickel (91%) cylindrical batteries, designed to achieve high output and high energy density for commercial truck applications. It was previously showcased at the 'InterBattery 2024' exhibition booth last month.

The partnership between Samsung SDI and Volvo Trucks has continued since 2018.

In 2018, Samsung SDI began supplying battery cells for electric trucks and buses to Volvo Trucks through the German pack company Akasol, and in 2019, the two companies signed a strategic business agreement for next-generation e-mobility. Since 2022, Samsung SDI has been directly supplying cells and modules to Volvo, and the packs jointly developed by both companies are installed in Volvo electric trucks.

In October last year, Martin Lundstedt, Chairman of the Volvo Group, along with Volvo executives, visited Samsung SDI's Cheonan plant to discuss strategic cooperation plans. At that time, both companies promised to expand battery supply for electric trucks and electric buses and to extend their cooperation scope to construction equipment and energy storage systems (ESS).
