Average Lunch Cost Over 10,000 Won in High Inflation Era
8,000 Won Cheaper Baekban Dosirak 'Hot Topic'
Free Delivery... Includes 5 Side Dishes
In a high-inflation society where the average lunch cost exceeds 10,000 won, a Baekban lunchbox filled with generous side dishes at an affordable price of less than 10,000 won is becoming a hot topic.
On the 20th, a post titled "I have started selling rice again" was uploaded on an online community. The author, Mr. A, who identified himself as a self-employed person, shared a photo of the pork stir-fry Baekban he plans to sell, saying, "One serving is 8,000 won, and a two-serving package is 16,000 won. Delivery will be free," and asked for opinions on his business.
Looking at the photo posted by Mr. A, the main dish, stir-fried pork, contains a generous amount of meat, and there are five side dishes including stir-fried anchovies, kimchi, seasoned bean sprouts, salted seafood, and shredded squid. The set menu also includes beef seaweed soup that fills the container, along with a bowl of rice and napa cabbage wraps.
Mr. A said, "I had to stop my business due to difficult times in the past, but this time I opened a new Baekban restaurant near Songnae Station in Bucheon." He added, "Due to many competitors, I decided on the price of 8,000 won after much consideration. The menu changes daily, and I am thinking about Baekban compositions such as beef ribs, seasoned crab, croquette fries, and braised tofu." He continued, "Baekban business relies on low margins and high volume, so you have to sell a lot to make a profit," and asked, "These days, it seems only low-priced or high-priced options survive. Would you buy it?"
Netizens who read the story responded with comments such as, "Is there any profit selling at this price?", "Please sell it quickly," "I am confident I could eat this every day," "Even if it were over 10,000 won, the composition is cheap, but 8,000 won is amazing," "The taste must be great, but the owner’s business philosophy is admirable," and "Even Ms. Kim Hye-ja (Hyeja Dosirak) would be surprised."
Meanwhile, the high trend in dining-out expenses continues in February. According to data released on the 12th by the Korea Consumer Agency’s Chamgagaek, the average prices in February for eight representative dining-out items popular among consumers, including cold noodles, pork belly, and bibimbap, showed an upward trend compared to the previous month. While prices of major ingredients such as flour and cooking oil have slightly decreased due to recent stabilization of global grain prices, the high inflation trend continues. In response, the Korea Consumer Organizations Council is urging that raw material prices be immediately reflected in wholesale and consumer prices to quickly ease the burden of dining-out expenses.
