From Surgical Video Analysis to Document Automation
Global healthcare company Johnson & Johnson is developing surgical artificial intelligence (AI) applications in collaboration with NVIDIA, CNBC reported on the 18th (local time).
According to the report, Johnson & Johnson MedTech (the medical device division) and NVIDIA plan to integrate AI into all devices and platforms used from before to after surgery, enabling surgeons to access all necessary information. Currently, AI is being used to analyze surgical videos and automate time-consuming documentation tasks.
Shan Jagatisswaran, Vice President of Johnson & Johnson MedTech and Global Head of Digital, said, "A one-minute surgical video is equivalent to about 25 CT scan images," adding, "If computing power and infrastructure that allow annotating and sharing videos become available, it will be a great help to surgeons."
He also stated, "We plan to support surgeons' real-time decision-making by displaying medical analytics data over the video," and analyzed, "Improved access to surgical videos will reduce residents' need to rely entirely on the insights of experienced doctors."
Johnson & Johnson MedTech is a company that develops medical devices and solutions for heart failure, kidney disease, stroke, and more, with its technology reportedly used in over 75 million procedures annually. The global semiconductor design company NVIDIA, which has partnered with them, is also known to have invested in medical devices and medical imaging for more than 10 years.
Kimberly Powell, Vice President of Healthcare at NVIDIA, said, "All data sources inside the operating room, from voice to internal camera footage, can be utilized in this AI development," adding, "Functions unrelated to medical diagnosis, such as automating paperwork, will soon be introduced, dramatically improving surgeons' work efficiency."
She continued, "As a patient myself, I am very excited to provide healthcare professionals with these top-tier tools and technologies," but explained, "However, this collaboration is still in its early stages, and it will take time to fine-tune the applications and implement them safely."
