Incheon Soraepogu Fish Market Faces 'Overcharging Controversy' Again
Prices Quoted Higher Than Those on the Menu
Two Snow Crabs 378,000 KRW · King Crab 540,000 KRW
The Sorae Port Fish Market in Incheon, which previously suffered from overcharging scandals, is once again under scrutiny due to merchants' aggressive solicitation and overcharging.
On the 24th, a video titled "Sorae Port Crossing the Line by Far, No Wonder People Complain" was uploaded on the YouTube channel 'Fish Teacher Mr. S,' sparking public attention. The YouTuber, who visited Sorae Port on the 12th, began by saying, "I now understand why people complain. This place seems hopeless. The problem has become deeply rooted."
In the video, as soon as the YouTuber stepped into the Sorae Port Fish Market, relentless solicitation followed. When the YouTuber said, "I'll look around elsewhere," and moved away, a merchant right next to him continued the solicitation to an uncomfortable degree.
The biggest issue was the overcharging. The YouTuber saw a sign stating 40,000 won per kilogram and expressed intent to purchase, but the merchant quoted 50,000 won, adding an extra 10,000 won to the listed price. When the YouTuber showed reluctance, the merchant said, "You don't have to buy, let's just weigh it," but never revealed the actual weight. Then, the merchant absurdly quoted 378,000 won for two snow crabs and 540,000 won for king crabs. The YouTuber confessed, "I was dragged in and only given explanations, but I feel like a criminal for not buying," adding, "From A to Z, I can't say a single good thing about this place."
Netizens who saw the video reacted negatively, saying things like, "I'm surprised people still go to Sorae Port," "Where are the merchants who apologized with deep bows?" "I will never go there again," and "If they overcharge this much even with a camera, it must be worse for ordinary people."
Previously, in June last year, Sorae Port faced backlash after it became public that customers were sold crabs missing legs. Following this, the merchants at Sorae Port Fish Market apologized with deep bows and promised to eradicate such sales tactics. However, in December of the same year, controversy arose again when a merchant was found to have verbally abused a customer, saying things like "Why ask if you're not going to buy?" At that time, Park Jong-hyo, mayor of Namdong District, stated, "Sorae Fish Market is not just a place to sell food but a place that offers citizens a warm atmosphere," but it seems the controversy will not easily subside.
