Park Seong-jun, Democratic Party Spokesperson, SBS Radio Interview
"Lee Nak-yeon New Party? Internal Momentum Not Strong... Justification Weak"
Park Seong-jun, spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Korea, stated that a meeting schedule is being coordinated between Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party leader, and former Prime Ministers Chung Sye-kyun and Kim Boo-kyum.
On the 13th, Park said on SBS Radio's 'Kim Tae-hyun's Political Show,' "I called a few lawmakers close to Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party leader, and when I asked, they said that anyone can meet for the sake of party unity and that the schedule is being coordinated."
Regarding a meeting with former Democratic Party leader Lee Nak-yeon, Park said, "It is open, and there is space for them to meet," but added, "Objectively speaking, I think it will not be easy for them to meet."
He continued, "Every politician has their own political path to follow, and it seems that former leader Lee Nak-yeon is walking his own path," adding, "So, if you call it a point of contact, it does not seem easy."
Regarding the possibility of Lee Nak-yeon forming a new party, Park said, "When we look at politics, we usually consider where the internal momentum comes from and who is around," and added, "Politics is about the leader's banner, but also about forming a faction around them, and whether that faction can form a consensus with the public and take root. That is mostly a prerequisite, and from that perspective, I think the internal momentum is not that strong."
He continued, "What can ultimately generate (political) energy and power is how much opposition is formed against the Yoon Seok-youl administration and how much of a front is formed among our supporters, but in that regard, I think the justification is somewhat weak."
In response to criticism that Lee Jae-myung's movements have been quiet amid the emerging 'Lee Nak-yeon new party' speculation, Park emphasized, "Regarding party unity, it should always be seen as something we are together on and open to," adding, "There is no need to view it too antagonistically, and former leader Lee Nak-yeon is also part of the idea that they can meet anytime."
Park also said, "The current leadership is cautious about his political moves and does not make any remarks, and Lee Jae-myung also does not mention it," adding, "This indicates how urgent it is to form a unified front and achieve integration within the party."
