Honda Sponsorship Ends, Cognizant Confirmed as Sponsor Next Year
Yang Yong-eun and Im Sung-jae's Honda Classic Victory Connection
The Cognizant Classic will fill the void left by the Honda Classic on the PGA Tour.
The Palm Beach Post reported on the 10th (local time) that "American information technology company Cognizant will take over as the new sponsor of the PGA Tour event, replacing Japanese automobile company Honda." The tournament will be named the Cognizant Classic. With Cognizant stepping in as the title sponsor, the tournament, which began in 1972 as the Jackie Gleason's Inverrary Classic, will continue its 51-year history.
The Cognizant Classic will be held over four days starting February 29 next year at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. With Cognizant as the new sponsor, the company will now support both men's and women's professional golf tournaments in the U.S., following its sponsorship of the LPGA Tour's Cognizant Founders Cup.
Honda was the longest-running sponsor on the PGA Tour, holding the title for 40 years, but announced last year that it would cease hosting the tournament. The Honda Classic also has notable ties to Korean players. "The Wind Man" Yang Yong-eun won the tournament in 2009, and Im Sung-jae claimed his first career victory there in 2020.
