Park Chang-hyun, who won the grand prize in the kiwi category this year, began cultivating kiwis in Beolgyo-eup, Boseong-gun, Jeollanam-do in 2007. He currently produces kiwis with 59 farms (34 hectares) as the CEO of Beolgyo Kiwi Agricultural Cooperative Corporation.
In particular, CEO Park has been reducing trial and error in the kiwi cultivation process by writing an orchard daily log every year and has been leading the production of high-quality kiwis by spraying homemade ‘compost tea’ on each tree.
Park Chang-hyun said, “I believe the efforts to produce premium kiwis accumulated over the years have borne fruit, leading to this honor.” He added, “I am pleased that this award proves the taste and quality of Boseong kiwis.”
A Boseong-gun official said, “We appreciate the hard work of farmers who strive to produce premium kiwis despite the worsening farming environment due to climate change.” He added, “The county will do its best to provide generous support so that Boseong kiwis can establish themselves as a global kiwi brand.”
Meanwhile, Boseong-gun is a representative kiwi production area in Korea, producing about 4,500 tons of kiwis annually over an area of approximately 260 hectares. In 2022, Boseong kiwis were registered as the first ‘Geographical Indication No. 111 for Korean Agricultural Products’ nationwide, recognizing their tradition and excellent quality.
