Ninetech and Energy11 Sign MOU for "Commercialization of Sodium Secondary Batteries"

Secondary battery equipment specialist NineTech announced on the 28th that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with sodium secondary battery specialist Energy11 to commercialize sodium secondary batteries and develop secondary battery equipment and materials.

Energy11 started in 2016 as the energy business division of Interpark Biz Market and officially launched in 2020 based at the Jeonbuk Science and Technology Promotion Center under Jeonbuk Technopark while promoting the development of sodium secondary batteries since 2019. By acquiring patents for composite solid electrolytes and secondary batteries using them from the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation of Cheongju University, it succeeded in commercializing sodium secondary batteries for the first time in Korea.

NineTech is fostering the development of secondary battery materials and recycling equipment technology as new growth engines based on mass production technology for secondary battery manufacturing equipment. The secondary battery sector operates an R&D organization dedicated to technology commercialization, from discovering new technologies to productization, and creates tangible and intangible achievements such as new patent applications through active technological collaboration with universities, research institutes, and startups possessing core related technologies.

Sodium secondary batteries are cheaper and less prone to explosion compared to lithium secondary batteries, enabling the production of safe chargers when applied to electric vehicle chargers. Accordingly, as the markets for electric vehicles and energy storage systems (ESS) expand and the volatility of lithium raw material prices increases, sodium secondary batteries are being recognized as the next-generation batteries to replace lithium secondary batteries.

Through this MOU, a NineTech official stated, “We will jointly promote commercialization research based on the sodium secondary battery technology possessed by Energy11,” adding, “We plan to accelerate research and development for commercialization by securing core technologies related to secondary battery equipment and materials through close collaboration.”
