Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon recently expressed concern that discussions on election law reform in the political sphere are progressing with little public interest, risking becoming a "league of their own." Furthermore, he urged the Democratic Party of Korea to take the lead in this political reform.
On the 26th, Governor Kim posted on his social media service (SNS) a piece titled "The Reason I Started Politics," stating, "A few days ago, I gave a lecture at Seoul National University, and students asked me why I entered politics." He revealed, "I started politics out of a sense of urgency."
He continued, "Many structural problems in South Korea that I experienced firsthand while serving as Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs were ultimately connected to political issues," emphasizing, "It was the urgency stemming from the fact that there is no solution unless the 'political arena' changes."
In particular, he said, "If you don't change the mold for making fish-shaped bread (bungeoppang), no matter how good the new dough is, you will only get fish-shaped bread," expressing, "I am very saddened recently because, although discussions on election law reform are in full swing in the political sphere, public interest is low compared to its importance."
He added, "We must not leave such an important issue of changing the political arena to a 'league of their own.' Election laws and systems are complex and difficult to understand, but some things are clear. We must not revert to a parallel system where major parties maintain, expand, and monopolize vested interests," he pointed out.
Furthermore, he stated, "Tricks like satellite parties that turned the political arena into a field of fraud are unacceptable. A new wave of political reform that breaks the vested interest structure and fosters diversity must rise strongly to change the current political arena. There should be a 'genuine innovation competition' over who in the political sphere will first and properly relinquish vested interests," he argued.
Governor Kim concluded, "At the Democratic Party convention last August, I proposed a resolution on political reform as the chair of the Political Change Committee, which was adopted with 94% support from all party members. The Democratic Party must take the lead on that path?the right path, the proper path?not just in words but by leading and putting it into practice," he advised.
Regarding this, a close aide to Governor Kim hinted, "Although election law discussions are ongoing in the National Assembly, they are sluggish and regressive. This is a time when more interest and participation from the sovereign people are needed, and the Democratic Party must take bold political reform leadership. This is why the post was made on SNS."
