Busan's Gijang-gun will conduct the "2023 Radiation Disaster Resident Protection Intensive Drill" on the 9th in accordance with the Act on Protection and Radiation Disaster Prevention Measures for Nuclear Facilities.
This drill is organized by Gijang-gun, the basic local government jurisdiction of the Kori Nuclear Power Plant Radiation Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ), and will involve a total of about 160 participants including local residents, public officials, Gijang Fire Station, and Gijang Police Station.
The drill will be conducted in a field action format at Sijang Village, Jangan-eup, located about 4 km from the nuclear power plant.
For resident protection, which is a key role of local governments in radiation disaster prevention during a radiation emergency, the drill will focus on ▲situation dissemination ▲indoor evacuation guidance ▲resident notification ▲distribution of thyroid protection medicine ▲traffic control.

Through this drill, the county aims to address shortcomings identified in last year's national Kori radiation disaster joint drill led by the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission and strengthen the initial response capabilities of local government field responders (public officials) to protect residents in the Precautionary Action Zone (PAZ).
Jung Jong-bok, the head of Gijang-gun, said, "This drill was planned with various contents to increase residents' interest and participation," and added, "Based on the results of this drill, we will reorganize the field action manual in the nuclear safety sector and do our best to enhance resident protection capabilities in preparation for nuclear power plant emergencies."
