In Gwangju Cheomdan 3 District, where a large-scale housing development project is underway, an elementary school with 25 classes and a middle school with 28 classes are expected to open in March 2027.
According to the Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education on the 1st, the plan to establish the (tentative name) Sandong Elementary School and (tentative name) Sandong Middle School in Gwangju Cheomdan 3 District passed the "Jeonnam Provincial Local Education Finance Plan Review Committee's Internal Investment Review" held on the 31st of last month.
This review aims to accommodate elementary and middle school students living in about 3,900 households scheduled to move in from October 2026 among the 7,576 apartment units to be built in Cheomdan 3 District.
The Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education plans to establish Sandong Elementary School with a project cost of 34 billion KRW on a 15,000㎡ site, consisting of 25 classes (24 general, 1 special) with a capacity of 670 students. Sandong Elementary School will also have an attached kindergarten with 3 classes and a capacity of 55 children. Sandong Middle School is planned to be established with a budget of 46 billion KRW, consisting of 28 classes (27 general, 1 special) with a capacity of 770 students.
According to industry insiders, "Pre-planning and design services will be conducted by the end of 2024, and the schools are scheduled to open in March 2027." They added, "Although the central investment review by the Ministry of Education is scheduled for January 2024, since the elementary and middle schools are planned to open in line with the apartment move-in schedule, residents of Cheomdan 3 District are not expected to experience any inconvenience."
Meanwhile, Cheomdan 3 District covers a total area of approximately 3,616,000㎡ (1.1 million pyeong) and includes the AI-based science and technology startup complex, one of the 10 major national tasks (scheduled for 2026), and the country's first National Cardiovascular Center (planned). By 2025, a total of 7,576 large-scale apartment units will be supplied. Upon completion, together with Cheomdan 1 and 2 Districts, it is expected to become Gwangju's largest residential-industrial complex new city, housing about 135,000 residents.
