'Knife Fight Threat Post' Given Leniency, The Shocking Boast of a 20s Youth's Last Moments

Prosecution Appeals Sentencing as "Mockery of Public Authority"

A man in his 20s who posted a "threatening post about a weapon rampage" received a suspended prison sentence in the first trial and then left a "trial review" on an online community, including content such as becoming "popular in prison." The prosecution has appealed, stating that he "mocked public authority."

On the 31st, Chuncheon District Prosecutors' Office filed an appeal with Chuncheon District Court, arguing that the first trial sentence of 8 months in prison with a 2-year suspension for A, who was indicted on charges of threat and obstruction of official duties by deception, was "too lenient and unfair."

A was arrested and brought to trial on charges of causing fear to an unspecified number of people by posting a message titled "I will stab with a knife at 7:30 PM" along with photos of a weapon on an online community in Chuncheon at around 6:56 PM last August.

During the investigation, A stated, "I did it for fun because others were also posting knife rampage threat posts."

The prosecution sought a one-year prison sentence for A, but the first trial court considered that A had no prior criminal record except for a fine for a different type of crime and showed no clear intention to carry out the actual crime, and sentenced him to 8 months in prison with a 2-year suspension.

However, after being released, A posted a message titled "I will write a detention review" on an online community at around 3 PM on the 26th. In this post, A described the process from the incident to the verdict, saying, "I was brought in for 'threat,' but it spread everywhere as a 'murder threat post,' so I became popular," and "I formed a brotherhood with someone who was detained for a murder threat post."

Chuncheon District Prosecutors' Office stated, "Considering that the crime caused about 20 police officers to be dispatched, obstructing official duties and wasting police resources, and that immediately after being released on suspension, he posted that he became 'popular in prison,' mocking public authority, we have filed an appeal."
