Gwangju Shinsegae Eye Clinic Introduces Honam's First Premium Intraocular Lens 'Zimetric'

Gwangju Shinsegae Eye Clinic has introduced 'Gemetric,' a premium multifocal intraocular lens for presbyopia cataracts newly developed by the world-renowned intraocular lens manufacturer HOYA. It is the first of its kind in the Honam region.

According to Gwangju Shinsegae Eye Clinic on the 25th, cataracts are a condition in which the eye's lens becomes cloudy, causing symptoms such as blurred or distorted vision, as if looking through fog.

Although cataracts are known as an age-related disease, cases among younger age groups have been increasing recently.

The treatment for cataracts generally involves removing the cloudy lens and implanting an intraocular lens. This intraocular lens performs functions similar to the natural lens, helping to restore vision and alleviate cataract symptoms.

HOYA's new trifocal intraocular lens comes in two versions and can also correct astigmatism simultaneously. The two versions are named 'Gemetric' and 'Gemetric Plus.'

Both models are made on the same platform with the same addition power, but the light distribution ratios assigned to distance, intermediate, and near vision are slightly adjusted, giving each model different characteristics. This allows individuals to choose according to their needs and lifestyle.

The Gemetric lens emphasizes distance and intermediate vision, while the Gemetric Plus lens focuses on near vision.

For myopic patients, surgery can be performed with 'Gemetric' and 'Gemetric Plus' lenses in each eye, and for hyperopic patients, bilateral 'Gemetric' surgery can be considered. This approach allows for a wider range of high-quality vision to be experienced more comfortably.

Since intraocular lens implantation involves inserting a lens of the appropriate size in a non-fixed manner, there have been occasional concerns about lens rotation. In the case of HOYA Gemetric, the intraocular lens support part is surface-treated to increase rotational stability and prevent the lens from rotating inside the eye. Notably, it shows a clear difference in glare phenomena, which distinguishes it from other intraocular lenses.

Chief Director Kim Jaebong said, "Although various intraocular lenses are available for cataract surgery at different eye clinics, the best intraocular lens requires precise and accurate examinations beforehand," adding, "It is most important to comprehensively assess the cataract progression, degree of lens opacity, risk of complications, and patient needs to implant an intraocular lens tailored to each individual's characteristics."
