Mrs. Olwin Green, Wife of Australian Lt. Col. Charles Green
Buried Together at Husband's Grave in UN Memorial Cemetery per Will
The wife of a United Nations soldier who died in the Korean War will be laid to rest at the Busan UN Memorial Cemetery where her husband rests.
The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs announced on the 20th that Mrs. Olwyn Green, the wife of the late Lieutenant Colonel Charles Green, an Australian war veteran, will be interred alongside her husband’s grave at the UN Memorial Cemetery at 10 a.m. on the 21st.
On the 25th, two days before the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Korean War Armistice Agreement and United Nations Forces Participation Day, a digital memorial for fallen soldiers from UN participating countries was set up at the War Memorial of Korea in Yongsan-gu, Seoul. Mrs. Green’s husband served as the first commander of the 3rd Battalion of the Australian Army, a regular unit of the Australian military. The Australian Army under his command was part of the Commonwealth’s 27th Regiment and led victorious battles at Yeoncheon, Bakcheon, and Jeongju.
Tragically, he was killed at the young age of 31 on October 30, 1950, by a shell fired by North Korean forces. Mrs. Green lost her husband at the age of 27, seven years after their marriage, and raised their only daughter alone, who was three years old at the time. She meticulously researched her husband’s letters, records, veteran interviews, and historical documents, and published his biography titled "Your Name is Still Charlie" in 1993, for which she received a medal from the Australian government. Mrs. Green devoted her life to serving veterans and bereaved families and contributed to Korea-Australia cooperation until her passing in 2019 at the age of 96. She left a will requesting to be buried alongside her husband at the UN Memorial Cemetery, but the ceremony was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and has now finally been fulfilled.
The joint burial ceremony, hosted by the Australian Embassy in Korea, will be attended by the deceased’s daughter and grandson, Catherine Raper, Australian Ambassador to Korea, Paul Lucamara, Commander of the UN Forces, Simon Stuart, Chief of the Australian Army, Yoon Jong-jin, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, and Park Jung-hwan, Chief of Staff of the Army.
