Gwangju's first private garden, ‘Hyusimjeong,’ held a commemorative plaque ceremony for its designation.
At 3:30 PM on the 15th, the plaque ceremony titled ‘Our Garden, Hyusimjeong’ was attended by about 100 people, including Lee Jeong-hyun, Vice Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Local Autonomy; Park Byeong-gyu, Mayor of Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju; Ryu Kwang-soo, Chairman of the Korea Arboretum and Garden Management Institute; Kim Yong-gwan, Director of the Forest Protection Bureau at the Korea Forest Service; Jeong Gang-wook, Director of the Green Policy Division of Gwangju City; and city council members Shim Chang-wook, Jo Seok-ho, and Park Pil-soon, who all graced the event.
The first part of the ceremony was hosted by announcer Shin Hye-bin.
On the afternoon of the 15th, at the commemorative plaque ceremony for the designation of Hu-sim-jeong, the first private garden in the Gwangju area, CEO Park Hwa-sil and attendees are holding the plaque and taking a commemorative photo.
The greeting and progress report were originally scheduled to be delivered by Park Hwa-sil, CEO of Mirae L&D, which operates Hyusimjeong, but due to health issues, Director Seo Geun-jong delivered the speech on her behalf.
Director Seo stated, “Hyusimjeong was designed and created with the theme of coexistence between nature and humans. The basic composition began in 2016, and finally, in May 2021, Hyusimjeong was born as a harmonious green space within the city and an industrial area.”
He continued, “Besides its social contribution of creating a restorative space in daily life, Hyusimjeong has been supporting local young artists and offering free outdoor wedding venue services for vulnerable couples. At the same time, it is also dedicated to revitalizing the local garden culture.”
He added, “We are planning a resident-participation contest utilizing part of Hyusimjeong’s land. We will collaborate with local governments and research institutions to reinterpret traditional local garden styles for modern times and apply them to the space.”
He concluded, “Through continuous innovation with the local community, we will contribute to making Gwangju City and Gwangsan-gu a city of opportunity that shines tomorrow.”
Lee Jeong-hyun, Vice Chairman of the Local Autonomy Committee, said, “I sincerely thank CEO Park Hwa-sil for cultivating such a wonderful garden in this excellent location and providing it as a resting space for citizens. I hope today will be the starting point for the second, third, fourth, and fifth private gardens to emerge in Gwangju.”
The Korea Forest Service focuses on public gardens such as Suncheonman Bay National Garden and private gardens including Hyusimjeong as key policies. Hyusimjeong is the first private garden in the Gwangju area and the 103rd registered nationwide. Currently, the 110th private garden is preparing to apply.
Following the greetings and encouragement speeches, a business agreement ceremony was held with Chonnam National University Technology Holdings Company, the AI Industry Convergence Project Group, and the GIST AI Research Institute for ‘Activation of Gwangju Metropolitan City Smart Gardens and Landscaping Industry.’
At this event, Hyusimjeong declared its leap forward as an AI-based smart garden befitting Gwangju, the AI-specialized city’s first private garden.
The first part concluded with the unveiling of the plaque, and the second part featured a keynote presentation titled ‘Vision and Future Plans for Gwangju as a Leading Garden City in the Era of Great Transformation’ by Song Tae-gap, Visiting Research Fellow at the Gwangju-Jeonnam Research Institute, followed by a policy talk concert ‘Gwangju Talks About Gardens’ chaired by Park Pil-soon, Chair of the Gwangju City Council Climate Special Committee.
Park Hwa-sil, CEO of Mirae L&D, which created Hyusimjeong, said, “We will advance Hyusimjeong, where culture, art, and nature are combined, into a smart garden enhanced with AI (artificial intelligence) technology, bringing new ‘rest’ and ‘vitality’ to the local community.”
