Train Village 3rd and 8th, Lively Market on the 5th Opens
The traditional market in Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Lee Sang-cheol) comes alive with a bustling 5-day market on the 3rd and 8th of each month.
People gather not only from within Gokseong-gun but also from nearby cities and counties such as Namwon, Sunchang, and Suncheon to shop at the market in this quiet village.
The residents of Dongpyeon Village in Gokseong-eup have rolled up their sleeves for all visitors to Gokseong.
This year as well, the residents are making efforts to create a beautiful village landscape and maintain it sustainably through the Clean Jeonnam Best Village project.
The residents of Dongpyeon Village in Gokseong-eup formed a self-governing association and carried out a mural painting project under the slogan, "I am responsible for the alley in front of my house."
They painted various murals to provide visual enjoyment for visitors to the Train Village traditional market and the village.
In every alley of the village, murals were painted reimagining the traditional pungmul troupe as a modern symbol wishing for the village’s peace and prosperity, and longevity for everyone’s health.
Additionally, the residents clean the mural-painted alleys together every month, removing weeds near the Senior Welfare Center and planting grass to keep the village landscape beautiful.
Furthermore, Dongpyeon Village in Gokseong-eup has an active culture of residents gathering for meetings.
This has become a foundation for harmony and cooperation among villagers, gradually strengthening the village community’s role and presence.
The head of Dongpyeon Village said, “With the Clean Jeonnam Best Village project in our village, which attracts many people, we will continue to paint murals on alleys with high resident demand, filling them with images wishing for residents’ happiness, making it a village where people want to stay and tourists are treated like neighbors.”
A county official stated, “Thanks to the Clean Jeonnam Best Village project, the entire village is shining brightly, and we could feel the vitality returning to the village that had been stagnant due to COVID-19. The administration will actively support the successful completion of this project and work to create a vibrant Gokseong-eup through this initiative.”
The Clean Jeonnam Best Village project in Jeollanam-do supports improving village environments and landscapes with active participation and leadership from local residents.
