Teachers' Union and Bereaved Families Announce Legal Action

A memorial service for an elementary school teacher in Daejeon who died due to malicious complaints from parents will be held in Daejeon.

According to the Daejeon Teachers' Union, the memorial service will take place in front of the Daejeon Metropolitan Office of Education on the afternoon of the 15th. Attendees will include members of the Teachers' Union, the Daejeon Federation of Teachers' Associations, the JeonGyoJo Daejeon Branch, and the National Elementary Teachers' Union. The Teachers' Union estimates that more than 700 people will attend the memorial service that day.

The memorial service, starting at 5:30 PM, will proceed in the order of a moment of silence, eulogies from the bereaved family and others, choir performances, and flower offerings.

Lee Yoon-kyung, Chairperson of the Daejeon Teachers' Union, stated, "The Daejeon Metropolitan Office of Education must take full responsibility and present effective measures to protect teachers," adding, "The Daejeon Teachers' Union will work with the bereaved family to investigate the truth and hold the malicious complainant strictly accountable for the death."

Earlier, a teacher identified as Mr. A at an elementary school in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, was accused by a parent of child abuse in 2019. It has been understood that Mr. A was continuously subjected to malicious complaints from the parent thereafter. On the 5th, Mr. A was found to have attempted suicide at his home in Daejeon and was transferred to a hospital but passed away on the afternoon of the 7th.

The Daejeon Teachers' Union and the bereaved family have demanded an apology from the parent who filed the malicious complaints and decided to initiate legal action. They also plan to request that the Office of Education recognize Mr. A's death as a service-related death.
