The Day After Retirement, Principal Causes Drunk Driving Accident... Victim Was a Student

A former high school principal who retired due to reaching the mandatory retirement age caused a drunk driving traffic accident the day after his retirement. The victims were two of his former students.

According to the Icheon Police Station in Gyeonggi Province on the 2nd, at around 6:30 PM on the 31st of last month, a Mohave vehicle making an unprotected left turn at an intersection in Janghowon-eup, Icheon City, collided with a Torres vehicle going straight on a green light.

As a result of the accident, two people in their 20s riding in the Torres vehicle sustained serious injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment. The driver of the Mohave vehicle, Mr. A, in his 60s, was also seriously injured and is receiving hospital treatment.

The police who responded to the report confirmed that Mr. A had been driving under the influence of alcohol. However, since Mr. A was severely injured to the point of having difficulty breathing, making it hard to measure his blood alcohol concentration, his blood was drawn in advance.

It was confirmed that Mr. A had been a principal at a high school in the Gyeonggi area and retired due to reaching the mandatory retirement age on August 30th, one day before the incident.

The two victims in their 20s attended the middle school where Mr. A had previously worked and were known to be his former students.

The police have booked Mr. A on charges including violation of the Road Traffic Act and plan to investigate the exact circumstances of the accident once his health improves.

Meanwhile, according to Article 44 of the Road Traffic Act, a driver is considered to be driving under the influence if their blood alcohol concentration is 0.03% or higher.

In cases of drunk driving, Article 93 (Cancellation or Suspension of Driver’s License) allows for discretionary suspension of the driver’s license, and if the driver commits drunk driving two or more times or refuses a breathalyzer test, the driver’s license must be canceled.

If a driver commits drunk driving two or more times or refuses a breathalyzer test, the level of punishment varies depending on factors such as the timing of previous violations, the level of blood alcohol concentration, and the degree of suspicion of drinking at the time of refusal.
