Gyeonggi Province will hold a Liberation Day celebration for the first time in four years on the 15th.
On the 13th, Gyeonggi Province announced that it will hold the 78th Liberation Day celebration at 11 a.m. on that day at the Gyeonggi Economic Science Promotion Agency in Yeongtong, Suwon. This is the first on-site celebration event in four years since the 74th Liberation Day in 2019 due to COVID-19.
About 400 people will attend the event, including Gyeonggi Governor Kim Dong-yeon, Hwang Deok-ho, head of the Gyeonggi branch of the Liberation Association, heads of city and county branches, Yeom Jong-hyun, chairman of the Gyeonggi Provincial Council, and heads of related organizations and veterans’ groups in the province.
Governor Kim Dong-yeon had previously expressed his hope to hold this celebration together while wishing for the recovery of Oh Hee-ok, the only surviving patriot in the province who is battling illness, during his speech commemorating the 104th March 1st Movement Day this year, but she will not be able to attend due to her health condition.
Instead, Oh Hee-ok’s eldest son, Kim Heung-tae, will attend to add significance to the Liberation Day event.
The celebration will feature a commemorative video highlighting the activities of patriot Oh Hee-ok, a Nanta performance by youth and young adults who are the main force of the future generation, and a Liberation Day dance performance. In addition, Kim Il-jin, a representative of the Liberation Association and son of the late independence activists Kim Hak-gyu and Oh Gwang-sim, will take the stage to lead the singing of the Liberation Day song. Furthermore, government awards and governor’s citations will be presented to 11 people, including independence patriots.
Meanwhile, Liberation Day celebrations will be held in 18 cities and counties in the province, including Yongin, Goyang, and Hwaseong.
