Daegu Foreign Language High School (Principal Lee Hye-jeong) announced on the 7th that 30 first- and second-year students who went on an overseas cultural experience trip to the UK attended a lecture by Professor Dennis Noble at the University of Oxford on the 2nd.
Professor Dennis Noble, who majored in physiology, is a world-renowned scholar who has been nominated for the Nobel Prize multiple times. He is also famous for his decisive victory in debates about the relationship between humans and genes with Professor Richard Dawkins, the author of the book The Selfish Gene.
Professor Dennis Noble of Oxford University is giving a lecture to students from Daegu Foreign Language High School visiting the UK.
Daegu Foreign Language High School students, who went on a cultural experience trip in the UK from the 23rd of last month to the 6th of this month, participated directly in Professor Dennis Noble’s lecture through the arrangement of Professor Kim Sung-hee, the representative of Oxford University’s knowledge-sharing program ‘Voices from Oxford’.
In his lecture, Professor Dennis Noble shared his life journey, explaining that although he was born into a poor tailor’s family, he overcame difficult circumstances to reach his current position. He shared with the students his view that “life can change in many ways according to the will of the organism itself, not because genes control humans.”
Anna Eun, a second-year student at Daegu Foreign Language High School who attended the lecture, said, “Listening to the professor’s life story taught me the lesson that it is my effort, not the surrounding environment, that determines my future, and I gained the courage to continue pursuing my goals.”
Lee Hye-jeong, principal of Daegu Foreign Language High School, said, “I hope that the encounter with a world-renowned scholar will serve as nourishment for students to move toward their dreams. We will continue to make various efforts so that students can grow into talents who lead the global society based on broad experiences.”
