Prescription to drink four Coca-Cola cans
"A good disposable treatment alternative to surgery"
An emergency doctor in New Zealand resolved an issue by having a patient who had a chicken bone stuck in their throat drink cola.
According to local media Stuff on the 2nd, a woman named Beth Brashy had a chicken bone stuck in her throat while eating chicken dishes at a restaurant in Wellington on the 23rd of last month. Brashy initially thought it was not serious, but after three days of persistent pain, she rushed to the emergency center on the morning of the 26th.
An otolaryngologist who examined her condition said, "The bone fragment is small, so there is no need to worry much," and prescribed drinking four cans of Coca-Cola. Brashy couldn't believe the prescription but quickly went to a supermarket, bought cola, and drank it all at once. The next day, her condition improved, and she said, "It was a very interesting experience." Regarding the unusual prescription, she explained, "It felt similar to pouring chemicals into a clogged drain. The cola seemed to dissolve the bone."
Brian Betty, president of the New Zealand General Practitioners Association, said, "I have never seen such a treatment method before," but added, "It is widely known that sugary acidic drinks like cola can damage tooth enamel."
He said, "Usually, we do not recommend patients to drink cola, but if it can avoid invasive medical procedures like surgery, it can be a good one-time treatment alternative," and added, "The doctor's prescription can be considered reasonable." He further explained, "There are also research results showing that cola helps bones stuck in the throat to move down," and "Carbonated drinks are known to dissolve bones by penetrating them and releasing carbon dioxide."
