"China Promises Not to Provide Lethal Weapons to Russia"
The United States and China have agreed to stabilize bilateral relations and to resume high-level dialogues. The U.S. also urged China to use its influence to address the North Korean issue and to stop provocations.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated this on the 19th (local time) at a press conference held at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing regarding the two-day visit to China.
Secretary Blinken said he discussed North Korea, which is increasingly escalating provocations, with the Chinese side. He expressed that the international community is interested in encouraging North Korea to act responsibly, halt missile provocations, and begin dialogue.
He added that China holds a “unique position (role).” This means China can pressure North Korea to engage in talks and cease dangerous actions.
Additionally, Secretary Blinken said he expressed concerns about China’s provocative actions in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea. However, he also conveyed that China promised not to provide lethal weapons to Russia in relation to the Ukraine war.
Secretary Blinken visited China on the 18th, marking the first visit by a U.S. Secretary of State in five years. On the same day, he held talks with Qin Gang, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister, and on the 19th, he met Wang Yi, member of the Communist Party Central Political Bureau. His final schedule included a meeting with President Xi Jinping.
