Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, argued on the 10th that social support such as Universal Basic Income (UBI) is necessary due to job losses caused by the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
At a meeting held at the Hashed Lounge in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, Altman said, "I want to redistribute the value created by AI, but realistically it is difficult, so I proposed the concept of basic income."
He added, "People think that as AI advances, AI will perform economic activities instead of humans, but this is wrong," and predicted, "The labor market may change from before, but ultimately people will continue to engage in economic activities."
He also revealed future business plans for the Worldcoin project. Altman has been working on a cryptocurrency project called Worldcoin since 2019. Through the project, he collects iris data and provides Worldcoin in exchange. He said, "If basic income through Worldcoin is provided to humanity, I believe it can further enhance human autonomy and more."
He also stated, "Blockchain and cryptocurrency enable the creation of better financial systems and are technologies that increase the value of the world."
Until now, the industry has pointed out the limitation that specific plans for securing funding to provide Worldcoin for free are unknown. Altman also refrained from commenting on funding plans to provide Worldcoin at this meeting.
Regarding related questions, he gave an indirect answer, saying, "I think if many people use Worldcoin, this can be resolved."
