Lower Greenhouse Gas Emissions per Unit Weight for Foamed PP Containers
Additional Products Applied in June... Expansion to Lunch Boxes and Other Containers
GS25 announced on the 26th that it will expand its ready-to-eat meal products using foamed PP containers, which can reduce carbon emissions by up to 25%.
On the 17th, GS25 launched the industry’s first ready-to-eat meal product, ‘1Seok3Jo Gogi Daecheop,’ using foamed PP containers. The container reflects eco-friendly trends by selecting foamed PP plastic, which has a lower greenhouse gas emission per unit weight. Lightweight technology (foaming technology) was applied to reduce the container’s weight. The foamed container has the advantage of not becoming hot on the surface after microwave heating, preventing burns, and it is resistant to high temperature, high pressure, and impact, with high durability that allows for washing and reuse.

‘1Seok3Jo Gogi Daecheop’ uses domestic pork (Handon) as the main ingredient, ensuring high meat freshness, and minimizes juice and nutrient loss through refrigerated distribution. It includes ‘Gochujang-marinated pork bulgogi,’ ‘Soy sauce-marinated pork bulgogi,’ Vienna sausages, and stir-fried fish cakes. It is explained that the product is popular not only as a side dish but also as a snack for ‘honsul’ (drinking alone).
The product sticker features the ‘GREEN SAVE’ icon and the phrase, “This product’s tray reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 25% compared to conventional containers.” On the bottom of the container, embossed phrases such as “Reduces plastic by more than 25% compared to conventional containers, recyclable” and “Recyclable foamed PP used” are included to promote the meaning of carbon emission reduction to customers.
GS Retail plans to apply foamed containers to the currently operated ‘1Seok3Jo Chinese Full Course’ products in June. They plan to expand the application to lunch boxes and other product containers to participate in activities to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Yoo Young-jun, head of the Frozen Ready Meal Team at GS Retail, said, “We developed products using containers that have a carbon emission reduction effect to actively raise awareness of the importance of environmental protection. We will continue to introduce various products that can practice environment-centered ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) activities.”
Meanwhile, GS25 has completely stopped ordering plastic straws since last month and decided to use only paper straws. Since November last year, they have developed and utilized ice cups that do not require straws and are establishing a culture of not using straws through promotions and campaigns. They are also using paper shopping bags with environmental protection messages co-produced with the Polar Research Institute instead of disposable bags. In March, GS25 participated in the ‘Earth Hour’ campaign hosted by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), during which about 1,000 GS25 stores turned off their signboards for about five minutes.
