'Dolsing Namnyeo's "Family Month"'
After divorce, when asked about the most painful day during Family Month, men chose "Children's Day," while women selected "Parents' Day," and the most embarrassing family event to attend was identified as a 'wedding.'
On the 15th, Only-U, a remarriage-specialized matchmaking company, conducted a survey jointly with matchmaking company Bienarae (CEO Son Dong-gyu) from the 8th to the 13th via email and the internet. The survey targeted 538 divorced singles nationwide (269 men and 269 women) hoping for remarriage, asking, "When is the most painful time during Family Month in May?" The results showed that men chose Children's Day (41.3%) and women chose Parents' Day (40.0%).
Son Dong-gyu, CEO of Only-U, explained, "Many divorced singles are both someone's parent and someone's child. Divorced women, who tend to have closer relationships with their children, feel heartache on Parents' Day because they worry about causing concern to their own parents due to divorce. Divorced men, who are often estranged from their children, feel emptiness and deprivation on Children's Day."
When asked about the most embarrassing family event to attend as a divorced single, both men and women most frequently answered 'wedding' (men 33.5%, women 38.3%).
Next, for men, the answers followed as 'outing with parents and siblings' (31.2%), 'holidays and ancestral rites' (22.3%), and 'parents' birthday parties' (13.0%). For women, 'parents' birthday parties' was the second most common answer at 32.0%, followed by 'outing with parents and siblings' (18.2%) and 'holidays and ancestral rites' (11.5%).
Lee Kyung, General Manager of Bienarae, explained, "It is common to exchange congratulations and well-wishes at family weddings. Attending weddings of younger siblings, cousins, or nephews and nieces while divorced can be embarrassing when facing the wedding protagonists or other relatives."
Regarding the frequency of attending family events compared to before divorce, opinions differed between men and women. More than half of men said it had 'decreased' compared to before divorce, while more than half of women said it had 'increased.'
The response 'increased after divorce compared to before' was 18.6% for men and 53.2% for women. The answer 'decreased after divorce compared to before' was 55.4% for men and 22.3% for women.
Meanwhile, CEO Son advised, "Over the past 20 years, about 100,000 divorces have steadily occurred, resulting in many people living alone as divorced singles. It is necessary to pay careful attention so that these individuals do not suffer emotional wounds during family-related anniversaries or events."
