Last year, users of the Altteul Transportation Card saved an average of 13,369 KRW per month on transportation costs.
The Altteul Transportation Card is a transportation card that provides up to 20% mileage rewards proportional to the distance traveled by walking or cycling for public transportation use, and card companies offer an additional discount of about 10%.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s Metropolitan Area Transport Committee (DATC) and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority announced on the 22nd that an analysis of the 2022 Altteul Transportation Card usage results showed these findings.
The number of Altteul Transportation Card users, available in all 17 metropolitan cities and provinces nationwide, increased significantly from 290,000 in December 2021 to 487,000 in December 2022, surpassing 536,000 as of March. The usage areas of the Altteul Transportation Card also expanded to 173 cities and provinces.
Last year, users saved an average of 13,369 KRW per month (9,245 KRW from mileage accumulation and 4,124 KRW from card discounts), reducing their average monthly public transportation expenses (62,716 KRW) by 21.3%.
In particular, low-income users saved an average of 17,657 KRW per month (14,263 KRW from mileage and 3,394 KRW from card discounts), which corresponds to a 30.9% reduction in public transportation costs.
The average number of uses was 39.6 times per month, an increase of 0.7 times compared to 38.9 times in 2021. The age groups of Altteul Transportation Card users remained high among young people who heavily rely on public transportation, with 20s (40%) and 30s (34%) accounting for the majority. The proportion of users in their 40s to 60s is also gradually increasing.
A satisfaction survey conducted last year with 44,818 Altteul Transportation Card users showed that 92.0% were satisfied or more (55.6% very satisfied, 36.4% somewhat satisfied), and 95.1% of respondents said the Altteul Transportation Card was effective in reducing transportation costs.
Meanwhile, satisfaction with the app’s stability, execution speed, and query/information update features decreased, indicating a need for improvement.
Minister Won Hee-ryong stated, "The use of the Altteul Transportation Card has reduced transportation costs, helping to ease the burden on citizens during the high inflation period. The number of users and usage frequency have both increased, greatly contributing to the activation of public transportation. Starting in July, the Altteul Transportation Card Plus program, which raises the mileage accumulation limit, will be implemented, further expanding the effect of reducing transportation costs."
He added, "As the number of users increases, we will improve inconveniences such as app execution speed and enhance convenience, aiming to develop it into a public transportation platform for not only the youth but the entire nation."
