Vice Chairman Kim Gyo-hyun "Business Cooperation in Clean Hydrogen, Ammonia
Battery Materials, CCUS, etc."
Lotte Chemical announced on the 10th that it discussed cooperation on eco-friendly projects with the Louisiana state government in the United States.
John Bel Edwards, Governor of Louisiana, USA, Kim Kyo-hyun, Vice Chairman of Lotte Chemical, and Hwang Jin-gu, Head of Lotte Chemical's Basic Materials Business, discussed ways to strengthen their partnership and additional projects on the 9th at Lotte World Tower in Songpa-gu, Seoul.
Lotte Chemical constructed a production facility with a capacity of 1 million tons of ethylene and 700,000 tons of MEG (monoethylene glycol) on approximately 990,000㎡ (about 300,000 pyeong) of land in the Lake Charles area of Louisiana, USA, and began commercial operations in 2019. This was the first case of a Korean chemical company building a plant in the United States. Through its U.S. plant, Lotte Chemical established a global base expanding from Asia to the North American region.
Vice Chairman Kim Kyo-hyun said, “Thanks to the support of the Louisiana state government, Lotte Chemical successfully completed the construction of the ECC plant in Lake Charles.”

He added, “Lotte Chemical will continue to discuss business cooperation with the Louisiana state government not only to expand existing assets but also for sustainable growth in areas such as clean hydrogen and ammonia, battery materials, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage technology (CCUS).”
Last month, Lotte Chemical partnered with CF Industries, the world's largest ammonia producer based in the U.S., to collaborate on clean ammonia projects within the United States. The two companies agreed to finalize the project scale through feasibility studies and demand analysis and to cooperate on investments in clean ammonia production in the U.S., including the Louisiana region.
Utilizing Lotte Chemical Global Infrastructure and CF Industries’ ammonia plant operation and distribution network capabilities, they plan to build local production facilities and import clean ammonia to Korea. By applying carbon capture technology (CCS), they will produce clean ammonia and supply it to Korea for use in power generation and bunkering for ammonia-fueled ships, exploring various utilization methods.
