[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Seoyoon] Kwon Oh-gap, Chairman of HD Hyundai, expressed his ambition to set ‘technology,’ ‘environment,’ and ‘harmony’ as the business directions for the new year.

On the 30th, Chairman Kwon stated in his New Year's address, "We have entered 2023 amid changes in domestic and international business environments, and it is necessary to deeply consider what mindset and attitude we should adopt in this era of change," presenting this year’s business directions with three key words.

First, he said, "The keyword we must focus on most this year is ‘technology,’" adding, "The technology development we aim for should focus on eco-friendliness, digitalization, and safety." Chairman Kwon emphasized, "This goes beyond mere technological advancement and will be the starting point of ESG management," and stated, "We must concentrate our capabilities on developing artificial intelligence (AI) technology."

He continued, "The instability of the global energy supply chain is accelerating, and demands for carbon neutrality are growing stronger," stressing a sense of crisis and urging, "We must once again recognize the importance of the environment." He requested that each affiliate strengthen their dedicated environmental organizations and prioritize the environment in all areas of corporate activities.

He also emphasized ‘creating technological synergy’ through harmony among shipbuilding, refining & chemical, and construction machinery affiliates. Chairman Kwon said, "The next 50 years will be a history of innovation and creation where technology, environment, and digital converge," and added, "Especially, creating synergy in the technology sector is important."

While emphasizing coexistence with partner companies, he also insisted on drawing a line against unfair demands. Chairman Kwon stated, "We should accept reasonable requests from partner companies to enhance their competitiveness," but "we must firmly respond to unfair demands or illegal acts, even if it takes time."
