Sent to Prosecution for Violation of Public Official Election Act
Mobilizing Cash to Recruit Party Members
[Asia Economy Reporters Yoo Byung-don, Jang Se-hee] Jin Seong-jun, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea accused of 'buying party members,' has been referred to the prosecution.
On the 30th, the Gangseo Police Station in Seoul announced that they had sent Jin to the prosecution the previous day on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act.
In May, Yoon Doo-kwon, vice chairman of the Democratic Party's Gangseo-eul District Committee, held a press conference raising suspicions that Jin recruited party members using cash and illegally leaked the list of registered party members.
Vice Chairman Yoon claimed that Jin received 40 million won from a sponsor, construction businessman Jo, to assist Kim Seung-hyun, who was then a candidate for Gangseo District Mayor, and instructed neighborhood association presidents. He stated that about 20,000 party member lists, including the list of approximately 6,000 registered party members, were handed over to members of the Daham Bong Society, and that the illegal materials were used to support candidate Kim.
In response, the People Power Party filed a complaint with the police against Jin and candidate Kim for violating the Public Official Election Act and the Personal Information Protection Act. On the 23rd, the police referred Kim's aide to the prosecution without detention on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act.
