[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] U.S. President Joe Biden stated on the 14th (local time) to Chinese President Xi Jinping that "the entire international community has a stake in ensuring North Korea acts responsibly," expressing the U.S.'s commitment to defending Indo-Pacific allies such as South Korea and Japan.
The White House reported that President Biden made these remarks during the face-to-face summit with President Xi on the same day.
In a statement released immediately after the meeting, the White House said, "President Biden expressed concern over North Korea's provocative actions and noted that all members of the international community have an interest in urging North Korea to act responsibly." Considering the recent series of provocations by North Korea, it appears that President Biden urged President Xi, who holds significant influence over North Korea, to restrain it. President Biden also emphasized the United States' firm commitment to the defense of its Indo-Pacific allies.
Tensions also continued over the Taiwan issue. President Biden told President Xi that the "One China" policy remains unchanged and opposed any unilateral changes to the status quo by any party regarding Taiwan.
The White House stated that President Biden "made clear the United States opposes China's coercive and increasing aggressive actions toward Taiwan" and "reaffirmed the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and surrounding areas."
