Officials from the Economic Welfare and Women's Committee of Changwon City Council in Gyeongnam are visiting the cultural space "Memory Space It-da," created by remodeling the former Suwon Station red-light district building, and taking a commemorative photo.
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Visits from local governments, local councils, and organizations aiming to benchmark the cultural space 'Memory Space It-da,' remodeled from a former sex trade district building near Suwon Station in Gyeonggi Province, continue to come.
According to Suwon City on the 19th, starting with public officials from the Women's and Family Division of Paju City on the 13th, on the 18th, members of the Economic Welfare and Women’s Committee of Changwon City Council and staff from Changwon City’s Women's and Family Division consecutively visited 'Memory Space It-da' to view the special exhibition 'Connecting the Memories of the District, Connecting the Future of the City,' and received explanations about the closure process of the Suwon Station sex trade district and the self-support projects for victims of sex trade.
Additionally, on the 22nd, a private council for village regeneration from Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, will visit the site.
Opened in August, 'Memory Space It-da' is located on the site where sex trade businesses once operated within the Suwon Station sex trade district. It is a single-story building with an area of 84.23㎡, featuring exhibition and community spaces.
It was created by remodeling the buildings of sex trade businesses remaining in the section designated for fire roads after all sex trade businesses voluntarily closed in May 2021.
The name 'Memory Space It-da' carries the meaning of transforming the former Suwon Station sex trade district, which had been completely isolated from the world for over 60 years, into a space connected with citizens, linking the dark past with a bright future.
Since its opening, the first special exhibition 'Connecting the Memories of the District, Connecting the Future of the City' has been held. This exhibition, running until the 22nd, features an archive showing the formation and transformation process of the Suwon Station sex trade district.
Starting next month, Suwon City will rent out 'Memory Space It-da' to institutions, organizations, and citizens. It can be used for non-profit exhibitions (art, installations, video, sculpture), performances, events, and programs.
A city official stated, "We will hold various exhibitions and operate citizen participation programs at Memory Space It-da," adding, "We will develop it as a space for citizens."
