[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] Sergey Lavrov, Russia's Foreign Minister, reiterated that Western countries, including the United States, are trying to destroy Russia, and that there was no choice but to start the 'special military operation' known as the airstrikes on Ukraine.
According to CNN and others on the 24th (local time), Minister Lavrov made these remarks during his speech at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York. Russia claims that the ongoing war in Ukraine since February is a special military operation aimed at liberating the Donbas region from Ukraine and protecting Russian-speaking residents.
Minister Lavrov said, "They (Western countries) are not ashamed to talk about not only inflicting a military defeat on our country but also destroying and dividing Russia," adding, "In other words, they want to eliminate this independent geopolitical entity from the world political map." He continued, "We all remember how aggressive wars based on false pretexts were triggered against Yugoslavia, Iraq, and Libya far from the US coast," and said, "Name a country where life has improved as a result of Washington's (US) intervention."
Minister Lavrov also mentioned the Taiwan issue. He emphasized, "The United States is playing with fire around Taiwan. And they (the US) are promising military support to Taiwan."
CNN reported that Minister Lavrov did not attend the United Nations Security Council meeting held on the same day.
