[Asia Economy (Hongseong) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Chungnam Province is bringing together domestic and international central and local governments and experts to seek leading policies for climate crisis response, carbon neutrality, and coal phase-out.
The province announced on the 6th that it will hold the "Chungnam Province Climate Crisis Proactive Response Carbon Neutrality and Coal Phase-out 2022 International Conference" from the 6th to the 7th at the Yesan Splash Resort.
Under the theme "Accelerating Carbon Neutrality: Great Transformation and Leap," this conference is hosted and organized by the province and the Chungnam Research Institute.
Attendees include Kim Tae-heum, Governor of Chungnam Province; Cho Gil-yeon, Chairman of the Chungnam Provincial Council; Kim Ji-cheol, Superintendent of Chungnam Office of Education; National Assembly members Hong Moon-pyo and Lee Myung-soo; Kim Sang-hyup, Co-chairman of the Carbon Neutral Green Growth Committee; Catherine Stewart, Canadian Ambassador for Climate Change; Mahamadou Tounkara, Director of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI); and Einer Jensen, Danish Ambassador to Korea.
Additionally, Han Hwa-jin, Minister of Environment; Ban Ki-moon, former UN Secretary-General; Alok Sharma, COP26 President; Ikuo Kabashima, Governor of Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan; Shogo Arai, Governor of Nara Prefecture; Daisaku Kadokawa, Mayor of Kyoto, Japan; Wang Dongfeng, Governor of Hebei Province, China; and Matt Kean, Treasurer of New South Wales, Australia, are expected to participate online (via video).
On the first day of the conference, Kim Tae-heum, Governor of Chungnam Province, will announce Chungnam’s five major strategies for carbon neutrality through a policy presentation.
Following this, Kim Sang-hyup, Co-chairman of the Carbon Neutral Green Growth Committee, will deliver a keynote speech on "Climate Crisis Risks and Future Predictions," and Kim Cheol-hyun, Head of Central Technology Research at Hyundai Oilbank, will present a case study on "Key Projects for Greenhouse Gas Reduction in the Industrial Sector," continuing the conference schedule.
On the second day (the 7th), the opening ceremony of the Coal Phase-out Alliance collaboration special event and sessions on spreading carbon neutrality will be held.
At the special event opening ceremony, Lee Pil-young, Deputy Governor of the province, and Steve Guilbeault, Canadian Minister of Environment and Climate Change and co-chair of the Coal Phase-out Alliance, will deliver welcome remarks. Catherine Stewart, Ambassador for Climate Change, will give a keynote speech on "Coal Phase-out and Sustainable Development," and Arunabha Ghosh, Climate and Environment Expert at the UN Secretary-General’s Office, will speak on "The Climate Crisis Era and Us."
In the carbon neutrality spreading session, on-site participants will engage in discussions under the themes "Finding Solutions for Energy Transition" and "Green Policy Transformation."
A provincial official stated, "The conference will be a place where domestic and international local governments jointly explore ways to realize carbon neutrality and coal phase-out and present a national milestone for climate change response."
Meanwhile, the "Carbon Neutrality and Coal Phase-out International Conference" has been held by the province since 2017 as a representative international climate and environment meeting for local governments, serving as a platform where domestic and international local governments, experts, and civil society organizations gather to discuss major policies and introduce new policies.
