AI Service Assisting Life Rescue in Emergency Situations Draws Attention

AI Service Assisting Life Rescue in Emergency Situations Draws Attention

[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] As artificial intelligence (AI) technology advances, cases of saving human lives at the crossroads of life and death are increasing, drawing attention.

On the 27th, according to the startup industry, AI startup ReturnZero operates the ‘VITO’ service, which displays call contents like a messenger. Through this, they possess a vast amount of Korean speech recognition data and advanced technological capabilities. ReturnZero provides related technology to public institutions and contributes to life-saving efforts. Earlier this year, ReturnZero collaborated with integrated counseling solution company Iris Frontier to build an AI technology-based 119 emergency call reception system, which is currently provided to the Gwangju Fire Headquarters.

The 119 emergency call reception, dispatch, and paramedics’ emergency treatment process are directly linked to the golden time for disasters and patients, but it takes time to accurately grasp and respond to the situation on-site during call reception. By utilizing the AI technology-based 119 emergency call reception system developed by ReturnZero and Iris Frontier, key keywords such as disaster location, situation, and symptoms can be extracted from the caller’s conversation received by the fire headquarters.

Through this, rescuers can quickly confirm the caller’s location by clicking the address linked with the Geographic Information System (GIS) when dispatching. The text converted from the caller’s voice is reflected in the on-site dispatch order, helping to accurately understand the patient’s symptoms and enabling more agile responses, thereby contributing to securing the golden time.

KT is addressing the blind spots in the care market for vulnerable groups such as elderly people living alone through AI technology. KT AI Care Service is provided via the AI speaker Giga Genie LTE2. When users shout “Genie, save me” in an emergency, a 24-hour rescue is possible through the linked system of ‘KT Telecop-119.’ Based on this, rapid response to emergencies is possible, and the KT control center manages the history afterward.

KT AI Care Service also assists actual rescues based on emergency alert functions. Following an elderly bleeding accident in Oncheon 1-dong, Dongnae-gu, Busan, in December last year, emergency calls occurred on the Giga Genie LTE2 device in March during emergencies in Seo-gu, Gwangju, and Naju, Jeollanam-do, and rapid rescue was carried out through the linked response of the local happiness welfare team and KT Telecop-119.

AI can also automatically aim and spray extinguishing water at the early stage of a fire to suppress it.

The autonomous initial fire suppression firefighting system, developed for the first time in Korea by the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials under the Ministry of Science and ICT, is a new concept technology that complements the shortcomings of existing fire extinguishing facilities. By autonomously aiming and spraying extinguishing water at the early stage when the fire scale is not large, it secures the golden time before the situation spreads to a dangerous level and fundamentally blocks the fire. This minimizes not only human casualties but also damage to surrounding equipment and facilities.

Existing fire extinguishing facilities such as sprinklers installed for fire suppression sprayed extinguishing water throughout the entire space upon fire detection. In contrast, the autonomous extinguishing system is designed to operate only in actual fire situations by learning fire and non-fire situations. Especially, instead of spraying extinguishing water throughout the entire space, it sprays directly aimed at the fire source, resulting in less damage to the space.

The autonomous initial fire suppression system developed by the machinery institute research team consists of fire detection sensors, extinguishing monitors, AI-based fire authenticity judgment, fire location estimation, and an analysis and control device that controls the extinguishing monitor. It achieves a fire detection accuracy of over 98% and can spray extinguishing water up to 65 meters.

SK C&C’s AI-based brain hemorrhage imaging medical solution quickly informs medical staff of the hemorrhage location and abnormalities. ‘Medical Insight Plus Brain Hemorrhage,’ which analyzes brain computed tomography (CT) images within seconds with over 97% accuracy, is diagnostic support software capable of interpreting small and subtle hemorrhages that are easy to miss. Based on the interpretation results, medical staff can make faster and more accurate diagnoses, helping to meet the golden time of 3 hours for brain hemorrhage treatment.

This service received Class 3 medical device approval from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in August last year. Starting with the Pyeongchang County Health Medical Center in Gangwon Province earlier this year, it was sequentially supplied to the Muju County Health Medical Center in Jeonbuk and the Ulleung County Health Medical Center. SK C&C plans to expand its supply not only to public medical institutions but also to major regional general hospitals in the future.
