[Asia Economy Culture Young Intern Reporter] A college freshman who had been living in an orphanage made an extreme choice, unable to bear the burden of independence, and his biological mother accompanied him on his final journey.
This morning (24th), a cremation ceremony and funeral mass for A, a college student who grew up in an orphanage, were held at Yeongnak Park in Gwangju Metropolitan City. A's biological mother attended and stayed by his side.
The Buk-gu Office of Gwangju decided to support the funeral procedures for A, who was registered in a protective facility, and after searching for family and relatives, they were able to contact his biological mother. She expressed that she did not want a separate funeral ceremony. Accordingly, the facility officials plan to complete the funeral procedures and then enshrine him in a columbarium.
A was entrusted to an orphanage from childhood due to family discord. He lived in a protective facility in the Gyeonggi area and moved to a protective facility in Gwangju after entering high school. After turning 18, regardless of his level of independence, he was supposed to leave the facility, but it is known that A applied to extend his protection period and stay in the facility until he was 24 years old.
After being accepted to university and leaving the orphanage to live in a dormitory, A jumped from the rooftop of a university in Gwangju at around 4:25 p.m. on the 18th. His body was found three days later on the 21st by a nearby resident. The police confirmed through closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage that A went up to the rooftop alone, and they plan to close the investigation, concluding that he made an extreme choice out of fear of standing alone.
In A's room, an unopened bottle of poison, soju, and a note saying "There are still many books I haven't read" were found.
Prior to his death, A told an orphanage official, "I am afraid of standing alone," and it is known that he was experiencing financial difficulties after using a significant portion of the 7 million won support fund he received when leaving the orphanage.
