When corn-based items appear on cafe menus and corn desserts start to be displayed on convenience store shelves, the "real" summer has arrived. Last year, shaved ice using corn bars and macarons caught the eye, and this year, a variety of products from ice cream to bread and monaka have been released. Here are four seasonal corn desserts that fully capture the sweet ripeness of summer corn.
Paul Bassett
Chodang Corn Ice Cream
Paul Bassett, which introduced the dessert called ice cream latte, has launched Chodang Corn Ice Cream for the summer. The texture is like chewy vanilla ice cream that melts smoothly, and the rich and creamy sweetness of the corn cream leaves a lasting impression. Its nutty yet sweet flavor pairs well with coffee. They also released Chodang Corn Ice Cream Cafe Latte, which is ice cream topped on coffee, so if just eating ice cream feels lacking, choose this option. The price is a bit high at 4,500 won for the ice cream and 7,500 won for the cafe latte, but the taste is excellent.
Tous Les Jours
Whole Corn Soboro
For those like me who unconditionally love soboro, Tous Les Jours’ Whole Corn Soboro is a dessert to pay special attention to. Between the corn-shaped soboro bread lies corn cream. The softly crumbling texture of the soboro scores 100 points, and the sweet and mild corn cream also scores 100 points. The nutty flavor of corn kernels felt intermittently is also delightful. It’s a taste I’d give 300 points out of 100(?). Although I wish there was a bit more cream inside, it’s still good as is. Chill it in the refrigerator and enjoy it with white milk or a slightly bitter iced Americano. The price is 2,700 won.
Oh Yes Corn
Mint chocolate, sweet potato, watermelon, strawberry & banana... A new face has appeared in the Oh Yes series. The star is Oh Yes Corn Flavor, which adds chocolate cream and corn cream between the bread. The outside of the bread is coated with chocolate, and the sweetness of the corn cream is quite strong, so eating just one can rapidly recharge your sugar levels. The corn cream tastes similar to the cream inside Samlip’s corn cream bread or corn ice cream. It is recommended to freeze it just enough for the chocolate coating to harden slightly before eating. One box contains 12 pieces. The price ranges from 3,000 to 4,000 won.
Baskin Robbins
Chodang Corn Ice Monaka
Baskin Robbins has released the sweet and creamy Chodang Corn Ice Monaka. Yellow corn ice cream is sandwiched between thin monaka wafers. While similar to Paul Bassett’s ice cream in that it is ice cream, Baskin Robbins’ version is chewier and sweeter. The savory flavor of the monaka wafers enhances the sweetness of the corn, delivering a pleasant sweetness. Overall, it is slightly moist, so if you imagined a light, crumbly monaka, it might be a bit disappointing. However, the unique way it lets you enjoy the characteristic sweet taste of corn is appealing. The price is 3,000 won.
