[Asia Economy Reporter Kum Boryeong] Kwon Seong-dong, acting leader of the People Power Party and floor leader, expressed his position on the resignation requirements of the Supreme Council members for the transition to an emergency response committee system, stating, "Looking at past precedents, the Supreme Council members resigned en masse before the emergency committee was formed. There is no precedent where the emergency committee was formed while only some members had resigned." Meanwhile, some first-term lawmakers have demanded the transition to the emergency committee system.
On the 29th, after attending the founding general meeting of the Fair Country Corporation held at the War Memorial in Yongsan, Seoul, Acting Leader Kwon responded to reporters' questions, saying, "There is talk that to move to the emergency committee, all Supreme Council members must resign, and also that it is possible if more than half of the Supreme Council members, i.e., four or more, resign."
He added, "Well, that should be asked to the Party Planning and Coordination Office. According to the party constitution and regulations, we need to get a more authoritative interpretation from the Planning Office," and explained, "We have not requested such an interpretation yet."
Earlier that morning, Supreme Council member Bae Hyun-jin declared her resignation from the Supreme Council. Within the party, interpretations differ regarding the requirements for transitioning from the current 'Kwon Seong-dong one-man' system to the emergency committee system.
At the event, Acting Leader Kwon said, "The Yoon Seok-yeol government inherited the worst report card from the Moon Jae-in government. These days, people talk about the three highs (3go), but it has become an era of five highs (5go) by adding two more highs to the three highs," and added, "It has been just over two months since the Yoon Seok-yeol government took office, so I think it was unreasonable to expect something new to be done within two months to ease the people."
This has led to interpretations that Acting Leader Kwon was responding to Supreme Council member Bae’s remarks. When Bae declared her resignation from the Supreme Council that day, she said, "It seems that even after about 80 days since the Yoon Seok-yeol government took office, we (People Power Party) have not been able to satisfy the public’s expectations with a clear image."
Meanwhile, some first-term lawmakers of the People Power Party urged the transition to the emergency committee system that day. In a statement, the first-term lawmakers said, "The ruling party has the duty to uphold the people's mandate to support the government's reform bills and restore fairness and common sense," adding, "The support the public gave to the People Power Party is turning into cynicism and disappointment, and we are very concerned that the reform momentum at the beginning of the administration may be lost."
They also said, "We highly appreciate the determination of lawmaker Bae Hyun-jin, who threw away her Supreme Council position for party innovation. We have the mission to create the first successful president in the history of the Republic of Korea," emphasizing, "The best way in the current situation is to swiftly transition to the emergency committee system to normalize the party and focus on passing the Yoon Seok-yeol government’s reform legislation in the National Assembly."
