Water Quality of Outer Waterways at Sudogwon Landfill Site 'Very Poor'... Exceeding Standard Limits by up to 10 Times

Construction Waste Intermediate Treatment Companies Flowing into Handeul Housing District and Geomdan Industrial Complex

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] It has been revealed that the water quality pollution in the outer waterways of the metropolitan landfill site in Seo-gu, Incheon is severe.

The Metropolitan Landfill Management Corporation announced on the 13th that the water quality of the outer waterways flowing in from surrounding industrial complexes and residential development districts consistently exceeds the lowest grade of the river water quality environmental standard, classified as 'very poor.'

The corporation regularly investigates the environmental impact on air, water quality, and soil around the landfill site in accordance with the Environmental Impact Assessment Act. The water quality of the outer waterways is measured between once a month and up to four times a year, depending on the measurement points and items.

The chemical oxygen demand (COD) of inflow water discharged by construction waste intermediate treatment companies located north of the landfill was analyzed at a maximum of 118.3 mg/L and an average of 83.2 mg/L, exceeding the 'very poor' standard of 11 mg/L by 4 to 10 times.

Additionally, the water quality of stormwater flowing in from the Handeul residential development district east of the landfill was recorded at a maximum of 84 mg/L and an average of 61.9 mg/L, exceeding the standard by 3 to 7 times. The water quality at the discharge outlet of the Geomdan wastewater treatment plant was a maximum of 35.3 mg/L and an average of 27.5 mg/L, exceeding the standard by 2 to 3 times.

The water quality of stormwater flowing in from the Geomdan Industrial Complex was also confirmed to consistently exceed the 'very poor' standard, with a maximum of 28.5 mg/L and an average of 19.3 mg/L.

The corporation stated that pollutants exceeding the standard at these points flow into Anam Lake through the outer waterways of the metropolitan landfill site, worsening water pollution. Pollutants discharged into the Ara Waterway are released into the sea in front of Incheon, causing marine pollution.

The corporation shared the results of the first half of this year's investigation with Incheon City and requested strengthened guidance and crackdowns on major pollution sources such as construction waste intermediate treatment companies, the Handeul residential development district, and the Geomdan wastewater treatment plant.
