Lee Seong-sang Disciplinary Review Over Alleged Evidence Tampering in Bribery Case
"Ethics Committee Is Not a Law Enforcement Agency"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Hyun-ji] Lee Jun-seok, the leader of the People Power Party, is under disciplinary review for allegations of ‘sexual bribery and evidence destruction instruction.’ On the 7th, Lee Yang-hee, the Ethics Committee Chair of the People Power Party, stated, “Comments such as ‘this discipline was planned by Yoon core members,’ ‘this is a witch-hunt style discipline,’ and ‘the party leader has the authority to dissolve the Ethics Committee’ are very inappropriate remarks.”
Chair Lee made these remarks around 7 p.m. at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, before a meeting, saying, “Recently, absurd statements have been rampant.” He criticized the claims that the Ethics Committee is backed by Yoon core members.
He added, “There are many calls for applying higher moral standards because he is the party leader,” and emphasized, “The Ethics Committee is not an investigative agency. If the People Power Party judges the ethics code and rules that party members must comply with based on decisions from investigative agencies, it would be denying the very existence value of the Ethics Committee.”
At the same time, regarding Lee Jun-seok, he said, “For the first time in constitutional history, a young man in his 30s was elected as the party leader. We all must acknowledge the role of Lee Jun-seok, who immediately led the presidential and local elections to victory.”
Chair Lee emphasized, “The Ethics Committee members will rationally review and judge the matter solely based on social conventions and standards, without considering any political interests.”
