Seoul City and Korea Expressway Corporation Joint Second Crackdown
137 Million KRW in Overdue Taxes Paid
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] On the 17th, the police announced that they collected a total of 1.37 million KRW in unpaid fines and taxes by conducting simultaneous crackdowns on vehicles with high and habitual fine arrears and unpaid highway tolls at a drunk driving checkpoint.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency conducted a simultaneous crackdown on drunk driving and vehicles with arrears in taxes and fines in cooperation with related organizations such as the Seoul Metropolitan Government and Korea Expressway Corporation from 9 to 11 p.m. on the 17th in the Gangseo-gu and Dongjak-gu areas of Seoul. This is the second time since April that the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency has conducted nighttime drunk driving checks together with crackdowns on vehicles with unpaid automobile taxes and fines.
This crackdown was carried out without prior notice to raise awareness among citizens about safety negligence and arrears in fines, taxes, and tolls during the period of returning to normal life following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions.
A total of 12 vehicles with arrears were caught, and 1.37 million KRW in unpaid taxes was paid.
The crackdown was conducted using patrol cars and vehicles equipped with an Automatic Vehicle Number Identification (AVNI) system to check arrears on-site and then enforce drunk driving regulations. The targets were vehicles with traffic fines of 300,000 KRW or more, automobile tax arrears of two or more times, and toll arrears of 100,000 KRW or more.
The police plan to continuously collaborate with related organizations to conduct joint crackdowns on vehicles with unpaid fines at drunk driving checkpoints, fostering a culture of paying overdue fines and taxes, and establishing fair tax justice through strong collection efforts against high-amount defaulters.
