[Jangseong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Jo Hangyu] Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do, has had ‘Baekyangsa Templestay’ selected as a ‘Jeonnam Representative Wellness Tourism Destination’ by the Jeollanam-do Tourism Foundation.
According to the county on the 31st, the Jeonnam Representative Wellness Tourism Destination contest project is a program to discover healing travel destinations representing Jeonnam in celebration of the ‘2022~2023 Jeonnam Visit Year.’ Seven tourist sites in the province, including ‘Baekyangsa Templestay,’ were selected.
Places selected as wellness tourism destinations receive support from the Jeonnam Tourism Foundation for wellness program development, promotional material production, and domestic and international online and offline promotion.
Baekyangsa Templestay is a traditional cultural experience program where participants experience the daily life of practitioners at Baekyangsa, where 1,700 years of Korean Buddhist history and culture breathe life.
It is divided into rest-type and experience-type programs. The rest-type allows visitors to stay at the temple, relax freely, and participate in Buddhist services, communal meals, bell-ringing experiences, and temple etiquette education.
The representative experience-type templestay program is the ‘Temple Food Experience’ with Jeonggwan Sunim, a master of temple cuisine.
Jeonggwan Sunim appeared on Netflix’s ‘Chef’s Table,’ drawing global attention to temple food, and was selected as a recipient of the Icon Award Asia 2022.
Choi Gyuwon, Director of the Culture and Tourism Division, said, “We hope that the selection as a wellness tourism destination will be an opportunity for Baekyangsa Templestay to be recognized as a representative healing tourism site in Jeonnam,” adding, “The county will also actively develop distinctive programs linked to local tourism resources.”
Meanwhile, Baekyangsa was also selected as a ‘2022 Safe Tourism Destination’ by the Korea Tourism Organization.
