[Asia Economy (Seongnam) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Seongnam City in Gyeonggi Province will hold various citizen events to commemorate the patriotic martyrs and war veterans in honor of June, the Month of National Defense and Veterans.
On June 6 at 9:55 a.m., Seongnam City will hold the "67th Memorial Day Ceremony" at the Hyeonchungtap (47-1, San, Taepyeong 4-dong, Sujeong-gu). About 2,000 people including Eun Soo-mi, Mayor of Seongnam, members of veterans' organizations, heads of institutions and organizations, and citizens will observe a moment of silence, offer flowers, incense, and hold a memorial service for the patriotic martyrs at the Hyeonchungtap.
On this day, bereaved families and citizens can freely offer flowers and incense.
The city will set up and operate a citizen flower offering stand at Yatap Station Plaza. Also, to encourage all citizens to participate in the memorial atmosphere, a siren for a moment of silence for the war veterans will sound throughout Seongnam City for one minute at exactly 10 a.m.
The city will also promote the early raising of the national flag on Memorial Day to honor the noble spirit of national defense. The flag should be lowered from the top of the flagpole by the width of the flag and displayed on the left side of the gate (or the front veranda for apartment complexes) when viewed from outside the house.
Since July 2021, the city has increased the veterans' honorary allowance for national merit recipients aged 65 and older from 70,000 won to 100,000 won to improve their welfare.
A city official stated, "We will actively promote the honor and welfare of veterans' families and members through various channels to help Seongnam City develop into a 'City of National Defense and Veterans'."
