[Jeongeup=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jaegil] Jeongeup City in Jeonbuk is taking the lead in establishing a mature companion animal culture and promoting the adoption of abandoned animals.
According to the city on the 27th, the current number of companion animals in Jeongeup is estimated to be about 27,000, and it is expected to increase further due to the rise of single- and two-person households, low birth rates, and aging population.
Also, the occurrence of lost and abandoned animals has been steadily increasing every year, continuing to be a social problem.
Accordingly, welcoming the season ideal for walking companion dogs, the city has been conducting an adoption promotion campaign called ‘Making Families for Abandoned Animals’ once a week from March 17 to this day at Jeongeup Cheonbyeon-ro, Nuri Park, and Naejangsan Culture Plaza areas.
The campaign shared the awareness that companion dogs are family members and simultaneously promoted a mature companion animal culture along with animal protection campaigns.
In particular, the city focused on promoting the animal shelter operated by Jeongeup City to citizens met on site, providing guidance on adoption procedures and operating hours.
As a result, from March to the present, 52 abandoned animals in the animal shelter were adopted by new families, achieving significant success.
The city also received great response by giving adopters of lost and abandoned animals at the shelter adoption gifts such as portable waste containers and waste bags needed when going out.
A city official said, “As the number of households raising companion animals has recently increased, conflicts among neighbors surrounding companion animals have also intensified. We will strive to create a culture where humans and animals coexist together.”
Meanwhile, Jeongeup City Animal Shelter is processing adoption procedures for about 170 dogs and cats, and when adopting, bringing an ID card and a portable pet carrier and receiving consultation about adoption allows free adoption.
